I finished Cold Water in less than a day.In truth, I think this book deserves a 3.75-star rating. Okay I know that's a weird rating but hear me out.
I found it hard to connect with the main character, Hope, at first. Being sarcastic, cynical and pessimistic is not my thing, though I understand the need to create a character like that. I couldn't understand why she hated her sisters so much. Sure, I knew the situation she was in and how her sisters had treated her, but throughout the book I was waiting, searching for an event that would BAM-smack-me-in-the-face, helping me relate with Hope and enable me to detest her sisters along with her too. It never happened, though.
Another thing that bugged me was the ending. I felt McQueen could've tied up some loose ends and given us more on how everything between Ash and Hope turned out. I felt something was missing after I read the last page. Like there was something more...but it slipped out of grasp, something like that.
If not for all that, I'd say McQueen has potential to spin stories that have more oomph in them.
Also, know this: McQueen's style of writing pulls you into the story and paints a pretty picture of Cleadon village and its inhabitants. I LOVED the meadow Ash brought Hope to, and the little island with the stepping stones! The characters in Cleadon village were extremely likable as well (except for Ben and his mates). I could relate most with Claire and her contemplative nature. Tia was a wonderful character too, but I wished for more character development. Jenny is the perfect mom!!
The romance between Ash and Hope is obviously the highlight of the book. Ash is the optimist, and is such a caring person though he keeps teasing Hope. Ash grew on me, but I didn't fall for him reader-wise. He's the thoughtful, cute and funny guy who tries to convert Hope to an optimist and keeps teasing the hell out of her, which I relish. Muahahaha.
I liked the change in Hope towards the end of the novel. I could better relate to her that way, and she became more...real.
I would have liked to see more of how Hope's sisters changed though. It was like a snap of the fingers and with only just a little push from Dawn, they all saw the light!
Overall, I must say that I enjoyed Cold Water. It was the middle part that drew me in, and not to mention McQueen's writing style!
I'll be staying tuned to whatever McQueen has in store next, and I bet her stories will become more vivid and memorable once she attends university. Cold Water is quite a feat for someone like her who finished writing it at the age of 18.
A tale of love, loss, forgiveness and change...I'm actually kind of glad I picked up this book to read. And I think you should too! (:

Cold Water eBook Annmarie McQueen Reviews
It is the best book I've ever read. It is my number 1 favorite book. But I think the authur needs to make a second book. I mean does Ash and Hope ever see eachother again?
Over all the authur did an awsome job with the keeping you on the edge. You never knew what would happen next.
You need to read this book!!! (this is a 12 year old telling you to read this, then it must be really good)
I really liked this book and was unbelievably shocked that the author is only 17. The story of Ash & Hope's summer together and their relationship growing was touching. I never write reviews but when I read the author's bio after reading this great story I had to. Kudos to her for such an impressive first novel.
This was a nice YA contemporary romance. I thought the story was interesting, with Hope running away from home and being taken in by the boy who found her and his mother. Ash and Hope's relationship is great because they spend most of their time antagonizing one another and you can see how they grow closer over time. It is a bit slow-paced at times, but the story has some nice twists to keep you wondering what will happen. If you like drama and teenage relationships, I think you'll like this one.
*I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
A young adult, coming of age, story, where the protagonist starts running away from home to return after having matured. A sweet-sour ending where there's something gained and something lost, leaving the reader satisfied. Fast pacing and easy to read.
I found this book to be very slow. I thought Hope's and Ash's relationship was odd. I just couldn't relate to the characters at all. I had to force myself to finish the book because I don't like leaving any book unfinished. I was relieved to get it over with and the ending was just as boring as the rest of the book.
I'm very impressed with this author! I don't want to write anything long, but wanted to give the book a rating in hopes that more people will get it. A book about finding yourself, letting go of the past and embracing the future whatever may come! Can't wait to read what's next from this talented young woman!
A cynical teenage girl runs away from a tough situation at home and is taken in by a family that shows her a kindness she's not used to. This new family also has a cute boy her age who irritates her at first, but who gradually grows on her. After a summer of adventures, she faces a tough decision that will tear her away from the boy who has come to mean more to her than she could ever have imagined.
This was a very pleasant read. A charming coming-of-age tale told in the authentic voice of a teenager because the author, surprisingly, is still a teenager herself. I hope she does continue on with her studies in English Lit at university because I want to see more from her in the future.
